The general consensus was that EA had the better game this year, but I was disappointed as well...and this is coming from a guy who was playing 2002
I think looking at the game review sites there were three general conclusions:

1) the EA game was better than the last couple of efforts

2) the 2k6 games didn't make enough improvements, seems unfinished in some respects (as all 2k games seem to be) and got knocked a bit

3) gameplay for 2k6 was considered better and overall it received better overall reviews. Of the common reviewers (info from gamespot.com) every single one on the list gave 2k6 the better score and for good reason...even with the flaws it's the better game.

The scores for EA NHL06:
gamespot: 7.6/10
09-21-2005 Gamespy 4.5 / 5
09-08-2005 IGN 8.5 / 10
08-17-2005 GamePro 4 / 5
09-26-2005 Game Zone 8.4 / 10
09-22-2005 Gaming Age B+
09-15-2005 UGO A
09-13-2005 1UP 6.5 / 10
09-08-2005 TeamXBOX 8 / 10

The scores for 2k6
gamespot: 8.5/10
09-20-2005 Gamespy 4.5 / 5
09-07-2005 IGN 8.7 / 10
09-09-2005 GamePro 4.5 / 5
09-19-2005 Game Zone 9 / 10
09-11-2005 GameDaily 3.5 / 5
09-07-2005 TeamXBOX 8.4 / 10
09-06-2005 1UP 7.5 / 10
09-26-2005 GameShark B+

my notes: 2k6 on the sim settings is WAY too easy once you start playing it for awhile especially with teams that challenge the pointmen on the penalty kill...you have complete access to the top of the slot. I haven't found allstar settings that provide a good sim yet....if anyone has any I'd be happy to try them.
