I still find a standard Mercator projection the easiest to read, even if it is hooped toward the poles on a small scale map.

Someone brought up measuring straight-line distances in Google Earth... you actually can do that in Google Maps... click the Google Labs link at the top, and you can turn it on. Also, there's a 'rectangle drag' zoom tool, which kicks ass over the slider widget. The Lat/Long tooltip is also cool.
