Is there a way to calculate distance on a map? I mean, aside from using the scale and ruler and trying to make a rough guess?

Is there some trick with Google Maps on how to do it? I can set a starting point and and end point and it will tell me the distance but it usually finds me the shortest route when I don't want the shortest route. I want a route that I specify.
