Could they? Yes, at least in theory.

But the current salary cap "climate" in the NBA is unlike anything I've ever seen in pro sports. Some (if not most) teams have been planning to sign free agents this offseason for two or three years. The Knicks specifically have purged all the talent (*snicker*) and all the salary commitents from their team so they can hand LeBron a max contract and let him do anything he wants with the franchise, including signing a max contract to at least one other player.
And that's just one team. The entire league has been holding it's collective breath for two years waiting for this upcoming offseason. There's no way any of these players negate this leverage.
