From my limited research I have found that ebooks are generally cheaper or comparably priced to regular books. But considering the high cost of any reading device it will take a long time to recover the cost of the device.
Just for example. I am reading the The Year Of The Floor. The hardcover is $20.68 and the ebook is $15.69 which is $5 cheaper. Not bad. But at that price it would take you 30 books to make up the cost. For me the cost of the books isn't the largest issue. I think selection is a bigger concern.
Still for a stand alone reader the Kobo is pretty attractive compared to everything else.
