You're not doing anything illegal... yet. The proposed copyright reform will likely outlaw what you're doing with your own, purchased DVDs. So ripping to an iPod, media server, etc. will make you a criminal just because you want to watch 1990s technology on a device from the 2000s. But that's another can of worms.
I use DVD Fab decrypter to rip the DVD to your computer. It is free for the decrypter. I believe that you can pay for a full version that will do your conversion too.
I wouldn't worry too much. There's a program called Handbrake that will take the DVD image and convert it to all sorts of different formats. It has presets for the various types of iPods.
Those two programs, both free, are all that I have ever needed.
