Public humiliation can sometimes be the greatest deterrent to illegal activities. Most people can afford the fines and they pay it and move on with no real consequences to their illegal activities.

When communities were small and everyone knew everyone else, there was less criminal activity because if you did something wrong and were caught.... everyone knew about it and it was tough to show your face around town. Nowadays with communities being so large, so many of us barely know our next door neighbors let alone the guy who lives down the street so when some people commit crimes they do it almost anonomously and when the get caught they go to court and nobody ever hears about it... except their immediate family.

I'm all for having their faces exposed to everyone. Too bad stocks in the public square have gone the way of the dodo bird! Maybe society would be better off if there was more public humiliation and less jail time.
