Even with the House taking 5% of EVERY pot in cash games*, and usually 10% of every tournament buy-in, all players who play, make money.
And do you want to know why? Because they only remember, and tell themselves/wife’s/husbands/girlfriends/moms/dads/.... about the particular times that they made money. For example; They play in 10 sit in go tournaments, 10 tournaments cost them $10+1, they win one for $46, maybe place in two others winning $45. So they've bought in for $110, and won back $91. Wife asks them how they did: Up $91 sweetie, calling in sick tomorrow!
I don't mean to pick on you csnarpy, or call you a liar. I understand people do make money, but it's far less then you'd expect. The only one who always makes money is the House. Even if you are slightly better then everyone else, and make better educated decisions, your still paying the House. Rake back programs give you back a bit of that money, but not all of it. People tend to even lie to themselves, to make it seem that they are profitable in their poker ventures. It's a reality that casinos, real or online, have taken advantage of for many years. Poker, blackjack, roulette, whatever, it's the casino that makes the money. The casino!

I am way down. Probably down about $75, and realizing that I'm a fish, I've stopped playing. I play once in a while just to kill an hour or two, but it's purely for entertainment, and no delusions about making a steady income. Although I don't know how much entertainment is derived from me screaming at the computer as some donk cracks my aces yet again....
However, I do know people that have made LOTS of money (like 5 digits+)from poker. And obviously they know how to take into account rake/buy ins when calculating their ROI/profit. Also, they use computer programs to track their earnings, so it's not like they will convieniently forget a tourney where they lost.
The losers? Well, people like me who don't take it seriously enough to buy software/read books/spend money and time to get better to help play. Then there's the decently rich people that think they're good but aren't, so they keep re-buying. I was watching some $100/$200 no limit, and watched as some person donked off $10,000 in less than 30 minutes.
