I agree with everything you said, except the comment on 12...

But you are right, the histories of both worlds could have and should have been explored further, there could have been more secondary characters. And having additional cities and town to travel too would have been great. One of my favorite parts of a RPG, especially the old ones like the older Final Fantasys and Secret of Mana etc. was rolling up to a new town after a long dungeon or hard boss battle and being able to explore it, looking at new weapons and items, getting new plot lines, etc.
