If you have a computer with Windows 7 Home Premium or up you can stream (without re-encoding) h.264 encoded mkv files to an Xbox 360 using Windows Media Center if you install this component using Windows Media Center Extender.

The main reason for using mkv instead of mp4 is because mkv natively supports multi-channel AC3 which is important for those with audio receivers.
