Now the techies will suggest that it is dumbed-down for stupid people. I think it just makes technology more accessible to people that otherwise wouldn't use it.

It's just good design. Techies are afraid of losing their smugness (although why they would be, who knows. the tech field is ripe with products to be smug with 'stupid consumer sheep' [or whatever denigrating term you want to call your (grand)parents])
