As a Lions fans I can tell you he was not the consensus number 1 pick because there were a lot of people saying he could go to the Lions which scared the hell out of me.
I know a lot of experts said that Johnson was a much better pick and that Thomas was the best player.

There were some questions about his drive but I don't think anyone could have predicted the near legendary lack of dedication and lazyness that he has showed. I don't blame the Raiders for the pick because they had a need at QB and Russell was the top rated QB in that draft class. He looks to be a bust but like I said I don't think any of the experts could have predicted such a lack of dedication.

They may not have been able to predict how lazy he was but it was clear that he had no idea how to read an NFL, or college, level defense and that he would struggle when he actually had to make reads and run a proper offense instead of running around and waiting for his recievers to beat their less talented opponents.
There are plenty of experts and laymen from that draft that aren't surprised at all that Russell did not have the football IQ to be an NFL QB.
