Advanced defensive numbers say he's still been a below average fielder this season. Of course, it's only 15 or so games in so it's not exactly a great sample size. However, even if Vernon can be a below average fielder it's a huge step up from being one of the worst fielders in the game that he was the past couple seasons.
Either way, Vernon's injury's were primarily in his wrist. I doubt we'll see any huge improvement in his fielding - especially considering the guy is now getting into his 30's. The Jays as an organization really need to recognize that Vernon's not a CF anymore. With the amount of time left on his contract, the Jays simply can't afford to be hampered by his poor defense because they don't want to upset Wells by moving him to a corner.
