I think they are supposed to be mined in a 'environmentally friendly' way too. Whatever that means. Probably still harmful, but maybe not as much.

Agreed. My wife's engagement ring has a Polar Bear diamond, from the Ekati mine in the NWT. Ten years ago when we got married, Ekati had only been producing for a year and a half and the premium on Canadian diamonds was ridiculous. I paid roughly 1 1/2 times what a comparable African diamond would have cost, but the peace of mind was worth it IMO. The Canadian stones have really come down since. They're still a little more expensive, but nowhere near what they were.
