I thought the battle scene in the last episode was the best I have seen since D-day on Saving Private Ryan. Very well done. It is really interesting how they are trying to portray the whole experience from the main characters point of view. From the one marine's reaction to the new guy turning down the smoke when they were about to go into battle. To the same marine giving the new guy his opened can of food.

Most people watch war movies because they want to see action, real or exaggerated. One thing that I like about this series is that they are trying to portray what it was really like to be in these guys shoes at this moment in time. I know that that is extremely difficult to do. This series does seem to give me somewhat of an idea what these men must have gone through, mentally and physically.

When BOB was originally airing on HBO back in 2002. I was watching an episode (the one where they are in fox holes in the forest in the winter and keep getting shelled) with my grandpa who served in Normandy. He was pretty critical of the whole thing. I told him that they probably had to shoot it that way so it would translate to the tv audience. For instance showing guys sitting in the pitch dark not saying a word would be pretty boring tv. He agreed somewhat, but I could tell he thought the whole episode was garbage. In comparison, he liked Saving Private Ryan. He told me the look of the battle damaged towns in France looked very realistic in the movie.
