You are clicking on the wrong thing. Instead of "open in a new tab" you should be moving the mouse down and clicking on the option below it "open in a background tab" :P







In fact, you don't even need to do that! Just press the middle mouse button on a link and it will open in a background tab.

Are you using mouse gestures? Tons of secrets and shortcuts in Opera many people don't know about. Hold down the right button and swish your mouse to the left for back and swish to the right for forward. Make an "L" shape to close a tab. Down-Up opens a new tab. Up-Down refreshes, etc.
