Default Poker Question...

I am a casual poker player at best, and I was stumped when this came up this week.

Our office has a weekly game every Thursday at lunch. The stakes are low and as you can imagine it is a pretty relaxed atmosphere compared to a casino.

The game came down to 3 people left, including myself, Paul, and Barney.

Going into the hand I had the most chips. Barney had the second most chips left, and Paul was third.

Pre flop action, the play is to me and I raise. Paul re-raises all-in, Barney calls and re-raises all in, I call.

The 5 cards are dealt and I have the best hand with a set of 7's. Paul has a pair of kings, and Barney is left with ace high.

In our weekly game everybody pays $10 to get in, winner takes all, and 2nd place gets their $10 back.

So after the hand I am the winner but we cannot figure out who should be second place. Is it Paul for having the second best hand? or is Barney for having his all-in covered?

Since none of us could say that we knew for sure, and because this is a very friendly, casual style game between co-workers, we agreed to play a final hand face up between the 2 of them to determine the $10 prize. Which they were both fine with, but it has bothered me ever since that I do not know the right answer to this.

If this were a competitive sit & go how would a casino handle second place in this situation?
