Too much bike for a first timer? Keeping in mind I used to ride a KX250 db so bikes are nothing new to me.

I wouldn't say they're too much bike for a first timer.
The street tripple is ~100hp, so it's no worse than most 600cc sport bikes.

The speed tripple is ~130hp, so it's a little more bike, but honestly if your'e ######ed and prone to get in trouble on a bike the difference between 100 and 130 hp is pretty much non existant.

I'd say it's not a bad choice.
Besides you're old so that means two things.
1) you're more likely not to be ######ed (though knowing you, I'd say that's less true than for most folks your age)
2) even if you do get into trouble, you've had a good run
