It's primarily used to backup your photos in the field. Yes it's smaller and has a larger hard drive (80 gigs), but it's also limited to just that one task and it costs $720.
My point is while it's easy to say "oh great, they just want another $20 out of you to buy an adapter" it's also easy to lose the big picture, which in my mind is that there are many devices out there for comparable prices that only do 1 or 2 things (photoframes, image backup devices, portable gaming consoles, DVD players, ereaders).
