As for not wanting an iPad... I wanted what I thought it was. Now that I find out more about it, it seems the laptop/netbook route meets my needs better right now even though a tablet type computer would have some serious advantages. One of reasons, but not the only one, is the ability to plug in a usb device.

There's a bunch. Don't know of one off the top of my head.
Let's wait until the connectors actually ship because Apple hasn't said that the USB camera connector won't be able to load files from a drive.
