What are these 3rd party hardware solutions you speak of? If those exist and are stable, they might actually resolve some of the issues I have with the iPad. I'm skeptical but it never hurts to ask.
As for not wanting an iPad... I wanted what I thought it was. Now that I find out more about it, it seems the laptop/netbook route meets my needs better right now even though a tablet type computer would have some serious advantages. One of reasons, but not the only one, is the ability to plug in a usb device.
