As far as I know, you can mount the iPad over WiFi and drag and drop files to it from a PC.

I haven't heard that you can't fore sure use the USB dock connector with a USB drive either.

I use Air Sharing on my phone to move files that can't be emailed. You just go to http:192.168.1.119:8080 on the PC and select the files and upload them to my iPhone.

There is also iTunes file syncing, iwork.com, google docs, and a plethora of other ways to move files to the iPad as well as 3rd party hardware solutions. If not having a USB port built into the iPad is the 'reason' someone would not buy it, they probably didn't want it anyways.
