The dad's family had been there for 350 years. That is a HELL of a long time. It's very understandable that they wouldn't want to give up their land, the life that they've only known.
That said, I do believe that family lines are more important than family property. At what point does this family give up and realize life and safety is more important than material well-being? I do admire their courage, however. If that's the route they choose to go, I completely respect that. But again... that mythical line needs to be determined. When is it crossed?
