The main problem with many of the bigger stores like the brick, leon's, lazy-boy etc. is their quality. The old saying you get what you pay for is usually very true at those places more so than others. The more locally owned shops tend to have better quality due to them needing to remain in business.

To compare, the brick etc are like the wal-mart of furniture. Their focus is primarily on the price point. Locally owned places like Sojourn, Bondars, Sandlewood furniture tend to focus more on quality while having lowish prices for the calibre of the pieces. Each group of shops is targeting a different market. It all depends on what exactly you're wanting out of the pieces.

Two places I avoid, and are my very last stop, due to overpricing are MacArthurs and Eisenberg's Furniture especially.
