In that specific case, she had no power. If she had refused the request to prorogue, that would have been an abuse of power and her position would have been eliminated. Canadians are not going to vote a party out of office because of the GG position so long as the position remains a figurehead. If a Governor General ever actually tried to influence our politics on behalf of England, I think the position would be eliminated very quickly. Canadians, in general, feel no connection to the monarchy and would be happy to get rid of the pomp and ceremony that goes with it. But its a loser of an election issue since it is dwarfed by much bigger issues.
BTW - I had no problems with Jean. I don't what specifically pissed off the people in this thread. Clarkson on the other hand spent all her time on lavish holidays and treated her term as one giant party.
