I suppose its just what you're used to. My entire life we've had disposals in our sinks and any leftover scraps go down the disposal. I don't put food in my trashcan if I can help it. The cans are picked up once a week and the smell of old food can get pretty strong. My cans are stored on my side yard, and my next door neighbor's patio is on the other side of the fence, I would feel bad subjecting them to an upleasant odor considering how frequently we all eat outside.

I've never heard not to put rice down the disposal. I've put rice down the sink many times and have never had a problem. The only time I ever killed the disposal was after peeling potatoes and having way too many raw peels go down there and jam it up.
