Not really. Ansi graphics used escape codes to add colour and various extended symbols and cursor control to regular text (like primitive word processing formatting codes, really)

This is using AALib, which is a high performance rendering engine that uses text symbols. You can get, for example, a complete version of Quake rendered using AALib.
