Total crap.

I walked from MSG to my hotel in the middle of Manhattan after a Rangers game and the streets were dead. The only things that attracts people to a downtown area after working hours are restaurants, bars, and theatres. It doesn't matter if there are 8 million people or 1 million, people don't randomly walk around downtown at 11 pm just for fun.

Being 9:00 pm on St. Patty's day, it was probably just a group of drunk ######s that were out of beer money. I wish him a speedy recovery.
