As far as Locke monster not dying, he didn't have a body, he's a smoke monster illusion, so the knife wouldn't have any effect.
But it was interesting that both sides didn't want to give their enemy the chance to talk. They don't want the chance of free will based on what Jacob or Smokey say.

No, Jacob's toast. Hurley talks to dead people, everyone he's spoken with is 100% dead. This is why the knife thing intrigues me, seems somewhat ceremonic, but a ceremony that is destined to fail.
