I have two kids from Haiti. My daughter just randomly said yesterday that she doesn't like kids calling her black. I asked why. She said it is inaccurate, she is more brown than black. So I asked if she would call me pink then...ya, she did later on. I am sure she will be correcting people at school today. (Hey, don't call me black, I'm brown...pinky). My personal experience is that most people don't get their knickers in a twist about how you choose to identify them (eg. black, brown, African-Canadian, etc.), but what raises ire is when you use a label that has had negative historical connotations or circumstances (eg. negro, coloured, etc.). But that is just my experience, yours may be different.
