I'm not in love with the HDMI connection. It seems flimsy, the cable can slip out easily, and the handshake problems with HDCP are well documented but as you say Display Port just complicates the issue.

Your HDPVR isn't a Bell 9242 is it? They've done umpteen updates and the audio sync problems still exist. It was double trouble for me as I also have an LG TV which has it's own sync problems so I run the audio through my receiver but I'd like a receiver that adjusts the sync because otherwise the 9242 is great.

I just read that 1.3 HDMI cables should be able to transfer 3D so we won't have to upgrade the cables either.
HDMI does have its warts. Doesn't do well over distance is a big one. (Hello, why didn't you use coax?) However, I'd rather see HDMI updated (with as much backwards compatibility as possible) than introducing competing standards built from scratch.

My PVR is a Pace Summit. No ammount of Googling has solved it, although I think using coax SPDIF instead of optical might do the trick.

1.3 and 1.4 use different connectors, so new TV = new cables.
