They aren't banning the sale of all protective screens. They have absolutely every right to make the choice not to sell something for whatever reason they have. It's their store, they can sell whatever they want.

I don't get all the apple hate, they are just a company selling products just like every other company. They don't have some far-reaching responsibility to the public.

The difference is it's Apple. People seem to think they are somehow different from other companies. The copyright argument is a good example of this. Companies threaten to take each other to court all the time for copyright infringement, but if Apple does it they're evil.
This story would be much more bothersome if they were trying to stop the sale of all screen protectors. You're completely right, it's their store and they are free to sell whatever they would like.
