My iPhone screen is scratch free after 2 years. I keep it in a pocket by itself and try to avoid putting it face down or putting things on top of it. So I don't think I would ever pick up a screen shield anyways. However, while my screen is scratch free, it is not crack free. Dropping if face down on concrete will ensure that. A screen shield would have done nothing. A case might have helped.
