This series covers four years of war and features three main characters who fight in different units. One of them (Basilone) is already a marine prior to the war. Another (Leckie) enlists immediately after Pearl and he is prominently featured in the first battle. The third character is not even in the marines yet and is apparently 4F with a heart murmur. Its pretty obvious that this series will have a much different format, as opposed to Band of brothers where all of the characters are in the same unit and do all of their combat within a one year period. Plus you have seen one episode and don't have the benefit of repeated watchings. I get a sense that this ones gonna get nasty. With all true stories about war, you'll get more out of it by checking a little background history, which is readily available. Just my opinion.
