I heaven't read the whole thread, so maybe it's been mentioned, but if you want to ride the cable cars (you should, it's pretty cool), do not line up to get on at the station on (I belive it's Market street and Powell St). That's where all the tourists get on, and the lineups are a pain in the ass.

Just head up the street a few blocks, and wait at a stop (just like a bus stop), and you should be able to just hop on (sometimes they dont' even make you pay if it's really busy, but I wouldn't count on it).
