I'm not sure I have ever seen 'tire' used in the UK, Australia, New Zealand or South Africa by native speakers (or spellers, as the case may be). I've long felt I'm the only one who spells it that way here.

Even now, the Oxford dictionary in my hand says:

tire n. (Amer.) a tyre.
