Sure, you're going to have a full spectrum of supporters for both parties in the US.
But when a substantial proportion of an otherwise progressive and well developed nation believes in what basically amounts to a fantasy (religion), one has a potential explanation as to why they support someone so clearly unqualified to be president.
They share values.
And political parties cultivate those values - see W's evangelical support, and the Republican party's hammering on the so called "elites". For the moment, they are all about religious conservatism, and propagating the idea that if you're educated, you shouldn't be in charge. The whole "I'd rather have the first 100 people in the phonebook running the country rather than the top 100 Univeristy profs".
Basically two groups (currently) support the Republicans. The owners of the Walmart, and the employees of the Walmart. The extraordinarily wealthy want a free market unencumbered by government restrictions. The employees want the lowest common denominator stuff - religion, redirection of popular discontent (illegals), and "get the government out of your pocket!" agenda.
A large part of this country honestly doesn't believe in evolution. Mostly because they don't WANT to as it would cause them to question their religious beliefs. We can frame that as a value if we want... I tend to call it stupid.
(I'm not clear on where they are at with regard to antibiotic resistant bacteria BTW).
