I preferred the 2D graphics if it meant you could explore towns and areas (and the world). It was funny because 7 was built up so much, it being the first cross platform, first under the same English and Jappo release, and was so many people's first taste of the franchise and everyone thought it was amazing and I thought it was average at best.
12 brought back true exploration for me, so that was a big plus. Probably the biggest reason why I didn't like the games 7+ as much as the ones before them. I liked the changes in combat, but I understand how one might not. As for the story I thought it was quite good, a little more adult than many of the last. A little more political, at least in the beginning. But storyline is obviously subjective too.
I also own the 2/4, 5, and 3/6 on the PS bundle packs (one came with Chrono Trigger too, another great game. Those are classics.

If you like randomness and not following a path I would not suggest this game for you then(if it really bugs you that much, but it sounds like you are an FF fan and will play it anyways). FFXIII is very linear so far and I am about 8 hours in. I like the game and I am enjoying every minute and the story seems very strong. The annoying characters get a little less annoying as you go on. If the reviews are true at reporting an FFX resemblance they are correct as the sphere grid is essentially back(but more guided) and the combat is FFX Style, but in real time. FFXII definitely comes through in the running around and having the mobs being present on the map. The Combat gets a lot more difficult to do successfully at 5 stars after the initial starting area (3 - 4 Hrs of play). At 8 Hours in I just received another tutorial and the game is getting more and more diverse in what you can do, but your pathing is very structured.
