Looks like the Wii is getting a bit of a bum rap so far, IMO. It's not a system aimed at hardcore gamers, it's what Nintendo said it was going to be when it came out; a system that everyone can play. If you're looking for serious solo gaming action, it's the wrong system. Where it really shines is in a group setting, I think it's the best for party games. You can have pretty much anyone come in the door, and they'll be able to play a good chunk of the games that are out there in a couple minutes, even if they're a non-gamer. The age range of people who I've played with is almost 70 years, and everyone's enjoyed it. It also gets a fair bit of play with the girlfriend. Some of the games seem pretty silly, but can still be quite a bit of fun. The virtual console and WiiWare offerings can also be worth checking out.
Personal favorites for 2 or more:
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Mario Party 8
Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree
Lego Star Wars
WiiWare:
World of Goo
Tetris Party
Defend Your Castle
Bomberman Blast
Having said all that, I don't find it as compelling by myself, and I usually pull out the PS3. Of course, it's all personal too. It really depends on what kind of games you're into, if multiplayer matters to you, and if so, what kind of group it is.
