The US Slurpee thing is really unfortunate. But those types of 'slush' drinks exist north of the border as well. Many non 7-11 convenience stores and service stations sell what is termed a 'Frozen Carbonated Beverage'. They are very similar in makeup - syrup and ice, but they are poured much more quickly from the tap resulting in more air and less ice.
If you ever encounter something like this, the way around it is to pour half into a cup and take a straw and stir the air out of it or tap the bottom of the cup on a hard surface. You will see the volume of air decrease as the contents of the cup settle. You end up looking like and idiot but it can usually sort out that common problem. Not 100% sure if this works with US 7-11 Slurpees, but it does with inferior Canadian ones.
