Actually I find I get better service at the box stores, at least with this kind of stuff because they don't care if it costs the company money while the little guys have to think about their bottom line all the time. At Best Buy anyway.
But yeah that's the risk of buying refurb, not having a warranty when you need it.
But it still might be worth a call to Acer to see, maybe there's a service bulletin out on those and if there is they may replace it for free anyway.
At least you found a replacement for a reasonable cost, I've seen those bricks cost a lot more.
