I think it's pretty clear they're separate entities, but they represent two sides of the same coin.

See, but the theory is that it's not really about dark/light side, it's about whether you believe in choosing your destiny, or in what's done is done - everything is set in stone. Bad/good is often in the eye of beholder.
One more thing, can Claire be "dead/brought back to life" too, just like Sayid is? In Season 4 when she lived at the Barracks, her house blew up and Sawyer found her inside with only a mild headache. Eh? Maybe a part of her died (just like part of Sayid died when he drowned) and that's why she's been acting all weird.
