I am sure that is part of the theme of the show; everyone has a light side and a dark side; however, Jacob is dead. If it's one person, Smokey should be dead, too. Not to mention Ben was in the same room as the both of them, and Smokey kicked Jacob's body into the fire.
I think it's pretty clear they're separate entities, but they represent two sides of the same coin.
