I had a similar problem. I believe my hard drive was overheating. If I turned the hard drive off for a few hours, it would work just fine after I turned it back on. I have since placed the hard drive on the stand that it came with, and have not really had any problems. I believe the stand lets more air around the unit to cool it. That's my theory anyway.
