This isn't terribly uncommon during the olympics when people start following sports they don't normally pay attention to. For instance, my mother in law was with us for a week at the beginning and insisted that Shaun White is a huge ###### because her brother-in-law (who worked transportation for the games) said he travelled in a limo instead of the bus with the other team members.
That was pretty much the basis of her hating him for many many days. She'll probably never speak his name again, but for those 5 days it was as if Shaun White snowboarded wearing a necklace of puppy ears.
The media made a big deal about kipper demanding to be #1. It sounds bad when you word it that way and don't consider the other factors (being a flame is primary, possible family time during an olympic break etc.).
