Apparently you can't start remembering things until you've developed your sense of "self". You can't have an episodic memory of
you if you don't know who
you are. I believe that occurs somewhere after the age of 2.
Edit: and also, "false" memories may be created, which is why clinical psychologists have guidelines about questions they can ask so they don't steer a patient into remembering something that didn't happen.
