I think the shows biggest mistake has been the huge breaks in between seasons, it has been so long since the last season, any other show and it would fall off the face of the earth, but Lost has this cult following that keeps it going.
In the earlier seasons I was addicted to the show, but woth the long breaks I can never remember what the hell went on. I'm not sure if the shows are any less captivating as before, I just think I don't care as much as I did before.

These long breaks don't help, that's for sure. Many people stop watching the show simply because they forget what's happened on the show 4-5 years ago. I think without lostpedia, the show is borderline unwatchable.
I mean last episode, they found Shannon's inhaler. Now her story might be completely done so it doesn't matter, but raise your hand if you remembered more about Shannon than she was Boone's stepsister, fell in love with Sayid and got killed (if you remember by who you get a bonus point). I remembered that, but after that...who recalls what was her back-story, did she say anything important in her flash back?
Without checking her lostpedia page, I simply wouldn't remember stuff like she kept seeing Walt's images. (BTW is his story line done too?) or heck even her last name, when it was shown on the lighthouse protractor (another bonus point for those who remembered her last name).
