I think the shows biggest mistake has been the huge breaks in between seasons, it has been so long since the last season, any other show and it would fall off the face of the earth, but Lost has this cult following that keeps it going.
In the earlier seasons I was addicted to the show, but woth the long breaks I can never remember what the hell went on. I'm not sure if the shows are any less captivating as before, I just think I don't care as much as I did before.

They're not on a break. It takes a LONG time to put together a season so it's either 6 episode spurts (which everyone complained about) or a whole season's worth of episodes with a little longer in between.
I remember the producers saying that for the season 4 finale, they were still editing on the day it was supposed to air and ABC didn't receive the episode until a few hours before it went on.
