There seems to be no focus whatsoever on rooting for a winner, just rooting against Americans. As an American, I'm frustrated. I considered not coming to this site during the Olympics because of the amount of negativity I expected to be directed to my country, the athletes from my country and the constant name calling toward Americans (which includes me). I think its a shame, honestly. The regular insults thrown toward Americans regularly was already mildly offensive. I find it a bit hypocritical for the same posters who constantly call Americans arrogant are so smug about how much better Canadians are because they're nice, while at the same time badmouthing the people of an entire country.

Obviously there are exceptions and perhaps the negativity about Americans is just being posted more frequently. Of all my local Canadian friends, I can't think of a single one who views America, or Americans, as negatively as some of people on this message board. If anything, the fact that the Americans want our hockey team to beat Canada so badly is a compliment. Do you think we don't know who the favorite is. Funny thing about my American hockey friends, when/if the US gets eliminated, we root for CANADA! Its a real shame Canadians can't embrace us the same way. I honestly believe we are more alike than different.

Sorry for the soapbox. I really am curious about the hatred and would like to know where it comes from, hopefully without more name calling.

A lot of it seems to be more to do with the rivalry than just being outright hate. That is one trait I've never really liked about certain canadiens, the bashing of Americans while explaining how we're really polite and nice and that's why we're better.

I have a buddy like that, and I cringe everytime he explains how we're better than Americans because we're polite, modest and humble, while at the same time boasting baout how Americans are a bunch of ignorant a-holes.
