If so, I'd dig into that settings utility to see if there is an option to disable wireless configuration access. It's a common security setting now since cracking wireless passwords is relatively common. It's a lot harder to hijack a router if you require physical access to it.

the router is a Dlink DIR-825. I tried digging through all of the options but I cannot see any area where I can disable the wireless configuration access...I might be overlooking it.
I tried just plugging the ethernet cable into the laptop but that did not work.
